BATON ROUGE — Sophomore forward Roslyn Jones has been named to the Women’s College National Team of the Week by Top Drawer Soccer for her outstanding play this past weekend in leading the LSU soccer team to a 4-2 win over Alabama on Sunday.
Jones scored a pair of goals against the Crimson Tide, including the game-winner in the 28th minute of play, and is now the team’s second-leading scorer with eight goals and 19 points on the season. She is the SEC’s leading scorer in conference action with five goals and 12 points in eight league games.
“It feels great to receive an honor like this, but I’m just happy that I was able to help my team come away a victory in a must-win game for us on Sunday,” Jones said. “Of course I like to score goals, but that doesn’t really matter to me as long as we win. We still have a lot to play for, and I’m looking forward to another big SEC weekend this week.”
Jones, who also scored LSU’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Auburn on Friday night, has developed into one of the top scoring threats in the SEC this season after starting 17 games as an outside right back along the Tigers’ defensive back line as a freshman last year. Her development has not gone unnoticed by the LSU coaching staff.
“Roslyn continues to improve every day and is a major factor for our success so far this season,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “She’s one of the most coachable players I’ve ever been around and soaks up everything we try to teach her. We’re excited about the kind of player she’ll become in the next two years.”
LSU looks for its second straight win when it travels to Columbia, S.C., on Friday to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks in a crucial match scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT. The Tigers are currently in seventh place in the SEC standings with 11 points, but are just two points behind Ole Miss for the lead in the Western Division and three points out of second place overall.
