BATON ROUGE — Quarterback JaMarcus Russell and soccer’s Roslyn Jones were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.

Russell led the Tigers to a 49-0 victory over Kentucky on Saturday in Tiger Stadium. The junior from Mobile, Ala., completed his first 11 passes en route to a 15-of-18 day that saw him throw for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

With his performance, Russell moved into a tie for third place in LSU history for career touchdown passes (37). He also became just the fifth quarterback in LSU history to throw for over 5,000 yards in his career.  Russell was also named the SEC’s Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.

Jones, a sophomore forward from Mandeville, La., scored three of LSU’s five goals on the weekend. She notched the Tigers’ lone goal against Auburn Friday night, before burying two in the net in the Tigers’ 4-2 win over Alabama on Sunday.

Jones is now the team’s second-leading scorer with eight goals and 19 points this year. She is also the SEC’s leading scorer in conference action, with five goals and 12 points through eight league games.
