BATON ROUGE — LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell and volleyball’s Melody Clark were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.

Russell was nearly perfect in guiding the Tigers to a 48-17 thrashing of Mississippi State, completing 18-of-20 passing for a career-best 330 yards and a career-high tying three touchdowns.

With his performance, the Mobile, Ala., native also set or tied three LSU records, establishing a new mark for yards in a half (272), while tying the school records for consecutive completions (14) and completion percentage in a game (90.0).

For his efforts Russell was also named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week and the LSWA Offensive Player of the Week.

Clark helped LSU remain undefeated in SEC play this season, leading the Tigers to a pair of three-game sweeps over Western Division foes Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Clark dominated offensively, leading the team in kills (24), hitting percentage (.360) and service aces (4) on the weekend. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native was also second on the team in blocks, with eight.

In addition, Clark picked up the 700th kill of her career and is now just 29 block assists shy of LSU’s all-time top 10 in the category.
