Dyakowski Honored by SEC for Community Service

BATON ROUGE — LSU offensive tackle Peter Dyakowski is this week’s Southeastern Conference Community Service Team Player of the Week, the league office announced.

Dyakowski, a senior from Vancouver, Canada, will be featured during the LSU-Mississippi State telecast on Saturday on Lincoln Financial Sports. Each week during the football season, the SEC honors and recognizes a student-athlete for their involvement in community service activities.

On the field, Dyakowski has started all four games this year at right tackle for the ninth-ranked Tigers, helping LSU to a 3-1 overall mark.

Off the field, Dyakowski rarely goes a day without donating time and effort to a community service cause. During his time on the LSU campus, Dyakowski has spent hundreds of hours volunteering in the community. Dyakowski’s giving has been so prevalent that he was honored last year with the LSU CHAMPS Community Service of the Year award for his efforts within the community.

Dyakowski’s community service related activities include participating annually in the CHAMPS Halloween BOOzar and the Christmas Toy Drive for children in the Baton Rouge area.

Dyakowski also participated in the 4-H University Club Event at the Maravich Assembly Center, where he signed autographs and visited with local kids ages 13-19.

He read “Where the Wild Things Are,” one of his favorite childhood books to 6th graders at Kenilworth Middle School in last fall. He was the Celebrity Guest Reader at their Read-In.

He also participated in the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual Strides and Rides Event at the Maddox Field House in 2006. He played games with kids, made beads, painted faces, signed autographs, and helped kids make it through the race.

He is a regular visitor to the pediatric ward at Our Lady of the Lake, many times going by himself, where he visits with children in the hospital and hands out posters and stickers.

He participated in the National Education Association’s Reading Across America Book Tour that was part of a Reading Relief Tour for Gulf Coast public schools.  He read Dr. Seuss books to kindergarten children at Belfair Elementary.

Dyakowski has also assisted in raising funds for hurricane victims as he helped organize and promote the annual LSU Student-Athlete Talent Show, which took place on campus in last May. The event was held to raise money for the LSU  Student Athlete Relief Fund and the organization Catch 22 for Blue.  Both organizations helped local victims of the hurricanes.
