Volleyball Ranked No. 12 in Latest Poll

BATON ROUGE — Riding a 10-match winning streak, the LSU volleyball team moved up to No. 12 in the AVCA/CSTV Coaches poll and remained at No. 13 the Volleyball Magazine poll, it was announced on Monday.

With wins over South Carolina, which was receiving votes in the poll, and Georgia last weekend, the Tigers have matched their 2005 mark with the best start to a season since 1991. The only loss for LSU this season came at the hands of undefeated and No. 2-ranked Penn State in five games in the season opening weekend.

The Tigers began the season receiving votes in the AVCA/CSTV poll, with LSU coming in at No. 30 among the preseason vote getters. The Tigers then moved to No. 22 in the first regular season poll and have steadily risen up the polls since then.

LSU was ranked for one week last season, coming in at No. 24 on Sept. 26 after also starting the season at 12-1. The last time the Tigers were ranked this high, LSU came in at No. 12 in the final poll of the 1992 season.

This marks the third straight ranking of the season for the Tigers in the Volleyball Magazine poll, who were also No. 13 last week. LSU entered the poll at No. 18 two weeks ago after beginning the season unranked.

The Tigers are among three Southeastern Conference teams in the AVCA/CSTV poll. Florida leads the way at No. 10, while Tennessee comes in at No. 17. There are also three teams ranked among the top 20 in the Volleyball Magazine poll. Florida comes in at No. 10 in that poll as well, while Tennessee ranks No. 16.LSU defeated the Lady Vols in five games in Knoxville earlier in the season.

LSU remains at home next weekend to face the Mississippi schools. Fans are encouraged to show their Tiger pride by wearing gold against Ole Miss on Friday, Sept. 29. Admission is FREE for those wearing gold to the game and gold “Walk on the Wild Side” t-shirts will be given away.

On Sunday, Oct. 1 against Mississippi State is “Camp Reunion Safari Day”. It is a chance for anyone who participated in the Fran Flory Tiger volleyball camps to get into the match free by wearing their camp t-shirt. Trading cards will be given away for a postgame autograph session.
