COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Freshman Ashley Murdock of the LSU women’s tennis team captured the singles title from her flight in the final day of the Maryland Invitational.
Murdock defeated her teammate Tiffany Tucker in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
“I am very proud of Ashley and Tiffany both because they had a hard fought match,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “It was close but Ashley just got the upper hand in the tiebreaker”
Freshman Nicole Kantor defeated Jessie Rhee of Yale in the consolation finals of the flight “A” singles, 6-3, 6-2.
In the same flight, sophomore Mykala Hedberg played to a 3-0 deficit against Maryland’s Marianne Baker before Hedberg was forced to retire from the match due to injury.
Freshman Sloane Mathis picked up her first win as a Lady Tiger as she defeated West Virginia’s Kathryn Klein in a consolation match, 7-6, 7-5.
In the “B” flight singles final, freshman Hannah Robinson fell in three sets to Maryland’s Michal Amir, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the same flight, Staten Spencer fought hard, but was unable to grab the win in her consolation match as she fell to West Virginia’s Natalia Prinz in three sets, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (6).
Due to a scheduling conflict in doubles play, the Lady Tiger tandem of Hedberg and Robinson did not play their teammates, Kantor and Spencer, as it was originally scheduled
The schedule modification worked out well for the Tigers as both teams defeated a Mountaineer team by an 8-6 count.
Tucker and Murdock could not grab their bracket title as they fell in the final match of the flight “B” doubles to Maryland’s Julia Graca and Brooke Rogers, 8-3.
Sophomore Megan Falcon will travel to compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades, Calif. this upcoming weekend. The team will then travel to Bloomington, Ind. to compete in the Indiana Classic the following weekend.
