Soccer Standout Makasini Named SEC Freshman of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU midfielder Michelle Makasini continues to add to her impressive resume as she has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season as announced by the league office Monday.

Makasini, who was named both SEC Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week on Sept. 4, helped lead the Tigers (5-4) to a pair of victories this weekend by scoring a total of four goals, including a hat trick in a 3-0 win against South Alabama on Friday and the game-tying goal in a 2-1 win against Southern Miss on Sunday.

The Euless, Texas, native also assisted on both of LSU’s goals in its 4-2 defeat at the hands of 14th-ranked Texas on Wednesday and is currently the SEC’s leading scorer after three weeks of the season as she has scored a total of eight goals and 19 points.

Makasini has started all nine games for the Tigers this season as a midfielder and has proven to be a consistent threat to opposing goalkeepers as she also leads the SEC with 38 total shots, 18 shots on goal and three game-winning goals.

The Tigers open SEC play at home Friday when they welcome the Vanderbilt Commodores to the LSU Soccer Complex in a match scheduled for 7 p.m. in their annual “Cram the Complex” campaign. They follow with a home match against the Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday at 1 p.m.
