Romero Named SEC Volleyball Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU volleyball player Daniela Romero was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.

The Arlington, Texas, native led the Tigers to a 3-0 record for the week to win the Billiken Invitational. LSU also posted wins over then No. 22 Minnesota and Texas A&M, which is receiving votes in the AVCA/CSTV poll, vaulting the Tigers into the poll at No. 22 for this week.

The win over the Golden Gophers was the first win over a nationally ranked team for LSU since upsetting No. 8 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl Classic early last season. It also marked the first win over the Aggies since 1991. The Tigers’ only loss of the season was a five-game loss to No. 2 Penn State in the first weekend.

The senior setter was named the Most Valuable Player of the Billiken Tournament. As the quarterback of the offense, she led LSU to an incredible .312 hitting percentage for the week with 18.18 kills per game. Individually, she led the team with a .517 hitting percentage and 13.73 assists per game.

Against St. Louis, she tied her career high with seven kills, while recording a pair of double-doubles against the Billikens and the Aggies. With 151 assists in three matches, she recorded her 3,250th career assist, which puts her in fourth place in career assists in Tiger volleyball history.

This is the first SEC Player of the Week honor for Romero in her career and the first of the season for the Tigers. LSU has now earned two SEC weekly honors after Lauren DeGirolamo earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors a week ago.

The Tigers return to action this weekend on the road at the Dayton Marriott Invitational. LSU will face host Dayton on Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on Indiana on Saturday at noon and closing out the tournament at 4 p.m. against Wake Forest.
