BATON ROUGE — Members of the LSU volleyball and gymnasts continue to lend a helping hand in the community, spending part of their Labor Day holiday volunteering at the 41st annual Jerry Lewis Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The teams spent three hours answering phones and taking pledges to help the MDA raise a record $61 million during the drive. Locally, the MDA telethon headquarters were at the Baton Rouge Hilton. Both of these teams have volunteered with the MDA Telethon in prior years. In addition, LSU has hosted the MDA “Strides and Rides” in the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse twice.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization fighting more than 40 muscle-wasting diseases that affect hundreds of people of all ages in our community. Funds raised through MDA special events held provide expert medical care at MDA clinics, MDA summer camps for youngsters, repair and purchase wheelchairs and other equipment and many other services. MDA also funds hundreds of the top scientists worldwide seeking treatments and cures.
