BATON ROUGE — LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell and setter Daniela Romero were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, by a local media panel.

Russell, a junior from Mobile, Ala., spearheaded the Tigers’ season-opening victory over UL-Lafayette, completing 13-of-17 passes for 253 yards and a career-best three touchdowns in just over two quarters of action. Now 15-2 as a starter, Russell’s three scores registered at 58, 28, and 16 yards, with the 58-yard toss marking the longest completion of his career.

Romero, a senior on the Tigers’ volleyball team, was named the MVP of the Billiken Invitational after helping LSU to three straight wins over No. 22 Minnesota, Texas A&M and St. Louis. Individually, Romero averaged 13.73 assists and 1.45 kills per game, while helping the team to a .312 hitting percentage over the course of the tournament.
