BATON ROUGE — Southern University junior quarterback JC Lewis and LSU junior corner back Jonathan Zenon were selected Monday at the first recipients of this season’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association College Football Players of the Week.
The selection came after nomination by the state school football sports information personnel and then a vote by a committee of LSWA members throughout the state.
Lewis, from Walnut Creek, Calif., got the Jaguars off to a strong start in a rallying 30-29 victory over Bethune-Cookman of the MEAC in a game played in Jacksonville, Fla. Lewis completed 63 percent of his passes going 24-of-38 for 271 yards and four touchdowns.
Zenon, from Breaux Bridge, had two interceptions including one returned 20 yards for a first quarter touchdown return in LSU’s 45-3 win over Louisiana-Lafayette. His other interception came late in the third quarter deep in LSU territory and he also added three tackles to his total.
