Coleman, Furbush Named Baseball America Top Prospects

BATON ROUGE — LSU pitchers Louis Coleman and Charlie Furbush have been named to the Baseball America magazine Summer Leagues Top Prospects List.

Coleman, a sophomore right-hander from Schlater, Miss., was named the No. 5 prospect in the Central Illinois Collegiate League. Furbush, a junior left-hander from South Portland, Maine, was named the No. 10 prospect in the Cape Cod League.

“We’re thrilled that Louis and Charlie received that kind of recognition for their performances this summer,” said first-year LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We’re looking forward to working with them along with all of our other pitchers as we begin building our staff this fall.”

Mainieri said the Tigers will begin individual practice sessions with their position coaches next week. LSU’s team fall practice period will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23 in Alex Box Stadium. Fall practice is scheduled to end during the final week of October.

Coleman, a starter in the LSU rotation last season as a true freshman, posted a 4-0 mark and a 1.04 ERA this summer in the CICL. He recorded 36 strikeouts and seven walks in 26 innings, and opponents batted just .156 against him.

Coleman helped lead the Danville Dans to a first-place finish in the CICL standings.

Furbush, who transferred to LSU this summer from Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, pitched brilliantly in the Cape Cod League, a wooden-bat league featuring the nation’s best collegiate players. He was honored with the league’s John Claffey New England Top Prospect Award after recording a 3-2 mark with a 1.83 ERA for the Hyannis Mets.

Furbush worked 54 innings for Hyannis, recording 13 walks and 50 strikeouts. He fired a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts to defeat the Bourne Braves, and he worked 8.1 innings in a win over the top team in the league, the Cotuit Kettleers.
