BATON ROUGE — LSU defensive back LaRon Landry is one of 35 players from across the nation named to the watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Friday.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year Award is the fourth-oldest individual accolade presented in college football. The first Walter Camp All-America team was named in 1889.
Landry, who enters his fourth year as starter at free safety for the Tigers, has also been listed on numerous preseason All-America teams entering the 2006 season. Landry is also one of just 10 defensive players named to the watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
In three years with the Tigers, Landry has led LSU in tackles twice, which includes the national championship season in 2003 when he recorded 80 tackles and three sacks during the team’s 13-1 season. For his career, Landry has tallied 241 tackles to go with 12.5 sacks and nine interceptions. Dating back to the 2003 season, Landry has started in 35 straight games.
Landry, a native of Ama, La., earned third-team All-America honors from the Associated Press following the 2005 season as well as being a first-team all-conference pick. He was named second-team All-SEC in both 2003 and 2004. He also earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2004.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in early November. The 2006 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 119 Division I-A head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced on the ESPN/Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet on January 13, 2007 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
Last year, Southern Cal’s Reggie Bush won the award.
