BATON ROUGE — LSU’s freshmen were again spared the heat and humidity as Mother Nature hit the capital city with another mid-afternoon thunderstorm sending the Tigers rookies indoors for the third straight day.
LSU’s veterans weren’t as fortunate as the Tigers’ morning session had the squad going just over two hours outside at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility. Wednesday saw the Tigers workout in shells (helmets and shoulder pads) for the first time as LSU continued to work towards Friday’s practice, will feature the first day in full pads.
LSU used Wednesday’s workout (the third day of fall camp) to continue the installation of the playbook on both sides of the football.
“I’m happy with the two practices that we had today,” LSU coach Les Miles said following the afternoon workout. “We had the veterans outside in the heat during the morning session and it was a little harsh. It was a good practice, but taxing at times. We have a long way to go to becoming a good football team, but I like the progress that we have made and the direction we are heading.”
As for the freshman, Miles said the group continues to make progress, while once again reaping the benefits of practicing in the climate-controlled indoor football facility.
“We started outside with the freshmen and got some good work in before Mother Nature stepped in and sent us back inside,” Miles said. “The young guys keep fighting and I am really excited about how hard they are working. If they keep doing that we look for some of these young guys to play a lot of football.”
Miles singled out the play of wide receivers Chris Mitchell and Jared Mitchell and running back Charles Scott as players who have turned heads during the freshmen practices. Defensively, Miles said he has been impressed with safety Danny McCray and linebacker Perry Riley.
“Chris Mitchell is really fluid and catches the ball well,” Miles said. “He seems to just continue to run and run well. He is really having a good camp and the same thing same thing can be said with Jared Mitchell. There are a number of young that are performing well.”
Miles reported that he has received no additional news on the status of freshmen Al Woods, Keiland Williams, Richard Murphy, and Steven Singleton. All four players are waiting to be cleared by the NCAA before they can report to campus.
LSU will conduct its final day of split-squad practices on Thursday as the veterans will practice at 9 a.m. followed by the freshmen at 3:30 p.m. LSU will workout as an entire team on Friday with one practice in full pads.
