Four Former Athletes Win Titles in Belgium

NAIMETTE-XHOVEMONT, Belgium — LSU had several of its former track and field athletes fare well at yesterday’s Meeting de Liege as four athletes picked up individual event titles and another three recorded top-seven finishes.

Former Lady Tiger Lolo Jones headlined the day of events, winning the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 12.61 seconds. The mark, .07 seconds better than her previous best, ranks as the sixth fastest in the world this season.

“It was my perfect race today,” said Jones on her race. “I’ve been training harder and mentally I did mature a lot this year.”

Other former Lady Tigers picking up titles included Stephanie Durst and Neisha Bernard-Thomas.

Durst snuck out her second straight 100-meter victory by just thousandths of a second, crossing the line in 11.26. Runner-up Kim Gevaert of Belgium was also clocked at 11.26, while former LSU great Muna Lee was third in 11.37.

Bernard-Thomas picked up her win in the 800 meters. The Grenada native finished in 2:01.35 to better the nearest competitor by nearly one full second.

On the men’s side, former Tiger Derrick Brew won the meet’s 400-meter title after circling the oval in 45.14 seconds.

Others top finishes included a third-place showing by Hazelann Regis in the 200 meters (23.20) and a seventh-place effort by Russ Buller in the pole vault (18-4 3/4).
