BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A total of 33 LSU student-athletes were named to the 2006 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll, Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Thursday.
The LSU football team topped the list of teams with members on the Honor Roll, placing seven student-athletes on the list, while the women’s soccer team had five members on the list. Both the baseball and women’s gymnastics teams had four student-athletes honored.
The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each had three members on the honor roll, followed by the women’s volleyball team with two selections. The women’s softball team, the men’s and women’s golf teams and the men’s and women’s track and field teams each had one student-athlete selected to the list.
A total of 489 freshmen student-athletes, an overall increase of 20 over last year, were named to the 2006 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll. A total of 2,120 student-athletes around the league earned Academic Honor Roll recognition in 2005-06.
The University of Florida topped the list with 61 freshmen student-athletes on the academic roster. The University of South Carolina was second with 50 honorees.
Each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment. The 2006 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2005-06 academic calendar.
