BATON ROUGE — Eight LSU media guides and the football game program for the 2005-06 seasons have earned national awards, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA), in the organization’s yearly contest.
The football media guide ranked fourth in the nation behind Kansas State, Oklahoma and Fresno State, while finishing second in District VI (Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas). It marked the highest ranking for the guide since ranking fifth in 1999. Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette, associate Sports Information Director Brian Miller and Publications Director Jason Feirman were responsible for the production of the football media guide.
Falling just short of the finish of the men’s basketball team, the media guide earned a fourth place national finish and a top-ranked finish in the district. The guide finished ranked behind Maryland, Florida State and Pittsburgh nationally out of 72 entries, the best placing for the men’s guide since a third-place honor in 2001-02. Feirman, Senior Associate Sports Information Director Kent Lowe and former graphic design coordinator David Hurd designed, wrote and edited the men’s basketball guide.
The women’s gymnastics guide also finished fourth nationally, behind Nebraska’s women, Illinois’ men and Utah’s women’s guides, out of 33 overall entries. The gymnastics guide also earned national recognition in 2002 and 2001 earning fifth place finishes each year. The guide was written and edited by Associate SID Laurie Cannon, with publication assistance from Feirman and student assistant Brandon Jantz.
The women’s soccer guide was voted second best in District VI and also selected sixth in the nation out of 55 total entries. LSU finished behind national winner Mississippi State, Auburn and Indiana. Feirman, sports information student assistant Will Stafford and graphic design coordinator Peter Hoang were responsible for the production of this guide.
For the fourth time in the last five years and third straight year, the Tiger softball guide earned a national award, finishing fifth behind Cal State Northridge, Ohio State, Nebraska and Baylor out of 52 entries. Last season, the softball guide earned its highest ranking, finishing second, while finishing third in 2004 and seventh in 2002. The guide was written and edited by Associate SID Melissa Reynaud, with publication assistance from Feirman and student assistant Krystal Bennett.
The men’s and women’s tennis guides earned the highest rankings of any of the LSU guides in 2005-06 with second and third place finishes respectively, behind only the Kentucky men’s tennis guide out of 70 entries. The men’s guide was written by SID student assistant Ben Wright and designed by Bennett and Feirman, while the women’s guide was written by Caroline Domecq and designed by Jantz and Hoang.
The LSU men’s and women’s track guide finished seventh nationally and second in the district. The combined guide earned the ranking out of a total of 62 entries. It marked the second-straight national award for the track and field media guide, which finished ranked third nationally in 2005. Cannon, Feirman and Hoang designed, wrote and edited the track and field guide.
After a complete re-design prior to the 2005 season, the LSU football game program earned a fifth-place finish nationally. Feirman took over the design of the game program prior to the season and he and Associate SID Bill Franques were rewarded with the first nation honor for the publication.
The publication awards will be presented at the group’s annual convention next week in Nashville, Tenn.
