LSU’s Southard, Huckabay Inducted into Marshall HOF

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director Judy Southard and former LSU assistant basketball coach the late Ricky Huckabay have been announced Monday as the latest inductees into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2006.

Also entering the Hall of Fame is football star Randy Moss, Bill Craig (baseball), Chuck Henry (football) and Scott Jackson (men’s soccer). The Hall of Fame weekend is Oct. 27-28 when Marshall plays host to Memphis for its Homecoming football game.

Southard and Huckabay were two of the most successful basketball coaches in Thundering Herd history.

Southard served as the Marshall women’s basketball head coach from 1981-92, senior women’s administrator/assistant athletic director from 1985-1992 and interim athletic director in 1987-88. She posted a 178-130 record in basketball as her teams won five consecutive Southern Conference regular-season championships from 1984 to 1989. She was a three-time SC Coach of the Year and she has coached four other members of Marshall’s Hall of Fame.

Southard served as AD at Texas Women’s University before joining the LSU Athletic Department in 2001. She will serve as director of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Committee beginning in September.

Huckabay, who died this year in his native Louisiana, had a stellar high school coaching career prior to joining the LSU men’s basketball program as assistant coach under Dale Brown in the early 1980s.  “Huck’s Herd” as their fans knew them won Southern Conference championships and went to the NCAA Tournament in 1984, 1985 and 1987.

Huckabay had a 129-59 record in six seasons. Marshall basketball attendance reached a record level of more than 8.000 per game under Huckabay, with four games drawing more than 10,000.

Huckabay is also a member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
