NEW ORLEANS — Designated hitter Jason Ogata’s two-out double in the top of the 11th inning scored shortstop Michael Hollander with the go-ahead run Tuesday and 15th-ranked LSU held on for a 6-5 victory over New Orleans at Maestri Field.

LSU (20-7) plays host to South Carolina this weekend in a three-game SEC series in Alex Box Stadium. UNO (15-12) travels to Miami this weekend for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Florida International.

Tuesday’s game was tied 5-5 with two outs and nobody on in the top of the 11th when Hollander drew a walk and stole second base before scoring on Ogata’s double, a fly ball that glanced off UNO center fielder Brandon Bowser’s glove.

LSU right-hander Chase Dardar (3-1), who had entered the game in the top of the 10th inning, struck out the side in the 11th to preserve the victory.

UNO reliever Justin Garcia (1-4) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered one run on one hit in 1.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout.

The teams were locked in a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth when LSU scored an unearned run to take the lead. Center fielder Jarred Bogany singled to lead off the frame before UNO reliever Ryan O’Shea retired catcher Robert Lara and pinch hitter Steve Waguespack.

But, Bogany then stole second base and advanced to third when catcher Josh Tarnow’s throw sailed into center field. Bogany later scored when Tarnow was charged with a passed ball on a pitch from O’Shea to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

UNO, however, recovered to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. LSU reliever Edgar Ramirez retired the first two Privateer hitters, but shortstop David Broussard singled and scored on left fielder Jason Schwab’s RBI double to send the game into extra innings.

LSU left fielder Bruce Sprowl delivered a two-RBI triple off of O’Shea in the top of the 10th to give the Tigers a 5-3 advantage, but UNO tied the game again in the bottom of the frame when second baseman Johnny Giavotella launched a two-run homer off of Ramirez.

Dardar earned the win by pitching the final 1.2 innings for LSU, striking out four of the five batters he faced.

LSU’s first two runs of the contest came via solo homers. Right fielder Quinn Stewart launched his 11th dinger of the season to start the second inning, and left fielder Steven Broschofsky unloaded his first career homer with two outs in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2.

Stewart’s home run was his 10th in LSU’s last 15 games.
