RIDGELAND, Miss. — Sophomore midfielder Sara Pollock and freshman defender Roslyn Jones each scored a goal in the second half to lead the LSU soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Ole Miss Lady Rebels on Saturday in front of a crowd of more than 4,000 at the Freedom Ridge Soccer Complex.
The match between the Tigers and the defending SEC Western Division Champions came on the front end of a double header featuring a Major League Soccer contest between the Chicago Fire and Chivas USA.
“Even though it’s the spring season, a win like this is an important step forward for this program,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “Ole Miss is an outstanding program and has had a lot of success in the SEC over the last several years. That’s evident by the fact that they won the SEC West last season.”
Ole Miss carried a 1-0 lead into the locker room, but the Tigers answered early in the second half when Pollock scored on a cross by junior forward Joleen Phillips to tie the score. Jones scored the game-winner shortly afterward in the 70th minute of play from 25 yards out on a pass from junior defender Julie Neumann.
LSU improves its record to 4-0 on the spring season with shutouts of the Challenge Soccer Club (3-0), Southeastern Louisiana (2-0) and Northwestern State (1-0) in the last month. The Tigers have one match remaining on their spring schedule against UAB in Orange Beach, Ala., in April.
