ATLANTA — LSU freshman Julius Gloeckner improved on his school-record 400 individual medley time in the preliminaries and then placed seventh in the consolation final of the event as Day 2 of the Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Arizona pulled ahead of three-time defending champion Auburn and leads 336.5-331.5 heading into the final day of competition. Stanford, Texas and Florida round out the top five. LSU is tied for 43rd with Penn State.
Gloeckner, who competed in the 200 IM Thursday, picked up two points for the Tigers with a clocking of 3:50.53 in the 400 IM “B” final. The mark placed him 15th overall. Earlier, the freshman recorded a personal-best in the prelims (3:49.38).
Gloeckner swims his final event, the 200 butterfly, at 11 a.m. Saturday. He will carry the 26th seed into the competition.
Meanwhile, sophomore diver Niko Dalman placed 21st in the 3-meter springboard Friday with a score of 286.40. Dalman participates in the platform event on Saturday.
