BATON ROUGE — LSU senior Kelly Lea was one of seven athletes named to the SEC Gymnastics Good Works Team, it was announced Thursday by the conference office.
The Good Works Team annually recognizes one athlete from each member institution that gives back to their community with superior service efforts.
Lea, a native of Bethlehem, Pa., has been an active member of the LSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in her four seasons at LSU. This past year Lea volunteered in the Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts by assisting doctors in the Special Needs/Triage shelters on the LSU campus. She also visited with terminally ill children at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Hospital and participated in the local Diabetes Walk and Strides for Rides, a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
In addition, Lea visited various elementary schools in the Baton Rouge area where she talked to the children about the importance of staying in school and living a drug-free lifestyle. She also participated in LSU’s annual Christmas Toy Drive that helps provide presents to underprivileged children in the community and joined with the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority on campus to host a pancake breakfast where all money raised went to the Pink Ribbon Campaign supporting breast cancer awareness.
On top of her superb community service involvement, Lea is also a member of the Gamma Beta Phi Service Honors Society, the Service Learning Student Advisory Council and LSU’s CHAMPS/Life Skills program.
