BATON ROUGE — LSU’s gymnastics team improved its regional qualifying score (RQS) to a 196.205, but did not move up in the latest national rankings as the Tigers held steady at No. 8 for a second straight week.
The nation’s top five remained unchanged from a week ago as Georgia holds down the No. 1 position for a ninth straight week with a RQS of 197.225. The Gym Dogs are followed by Utah (196.595), Florida (196.515), Iowa State (196.505) and Alabama (196.365).
Oklahoma (196.335), Michigan (196.230), LSU (196.205, Arizona State (196.120) and Stanford (196.085) round out the bottom half of the top 10.
LSU is again ranked among the nation’s top 12 on each of the four individual events. The Tigers improved two spots to No. 2 on the floor (49.270), moved up one position to No. 9 on the beam (49.005), held steady at No. 11 on the vault (49.095) and dropped one spot to No. 11 on the bars (49.000).
The Tigers also have three individuals, in April Burkholder, Kelly Phelan and Terin Martinjak, listed among the top 25.
Burkholder improved to No. 7 in the all-around rankings after claiming her seventh individual overall title of the season last Friday against UCLA. She is also listed at No. 5 in the country on the floor, No. 15 on the beam and No. 24 on the vault.
Phelan slipped to No. 20 in the all-around standings with a RQS of 39.245. She is also ranked third on the floor.
Martinjak comes in at No. 14 on the beam and No. 20 on the floor this week.
The Tigers return to action this Saturday when they travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the SEC Championships at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex.
