BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team takes a break from its tough Southeastern Conference schedule to face Prairie View A&M in a midweek match Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The contest was previously scheduled for the opening match of the season Jan. 21, but rain forced it to be pushed back to this date. It was also pushed back from the previously announced 4 p.m. start time to a 5 p.m. one.
“It will be good to make up this match from earlier in the season and to just get back on the court,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “We need to take advantage of this extra match to get some good tennis in.”
The Lady Tigers own a 7-5 overall record heading into the meeting, but are in the midst of a four-match losing skid. After starting the year at 7-1, LSU has lost its first four SEC contests.
Prairie View A&M brings a 1-6 record into the match. A young team composed of two juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen, the Panthers are led in singles wins by freshman Melanie Brown.
The two teams have never faced each other, so this match will add another team to LSU’s list of all-time opponents.
“It’s always exciting to play a new team,” Minnis said, “so we’re looking forward to seeing what kind of competition we will face in Prairie View A&M.”
The Lady Tigers take this weekend off and have another non-conference match-up next week versus Kansas.
