BATON ROUGE — Despite improving its regional qualifying score to a 196.065 the LSU gymnastics team slipped one spot to No. 8 in the latest national rankings released Monday.
Georgia maintained its stranglehold on the nation’s No. 1 position, leading the country for the eighth straight week with a RQS of 197.225. Utah jumped four spots to No. 2 (196.425) and is followed by Florida (196.355), Iowa State (196.340) and Alabama (196.315) in the top five.
LSU did maintain its top 15 status on each of the four individual events, holding steady at No. 4 on the floor (49.220) and No. 11 on the vault (49.095, while improving to No. 10 on both the bars (48.975) and beam (48.900).
The Tigers also have three individuals ranked among the top 25 this week.
Senior April Burkholder is listed at No. 8 in the all-around (39.395), No. 9 on the floor (9.900), No. 12 on the beam (9.865) and No. 23 on the vault (9.870).
Junior Kelly Phelan improved seven spots to No. 15 in the all-around with a RQS of 39.245. She also slipped one spot to No. 2 on the floor (9.910) after two weeks at the No. 1 position.
Rounding out the list of ranked Tigers is senior Terin Martinjak. She improved nine spots to No. 13 on the beam (9.860) and re-entered the floor rankings at 23rd (9.870).
The Tigers close out the regular season home schedule this Friday when they host No. 10 UCLA in a dual meet at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
