Former Tiger Davis Wins USATF Jim Thorpe Award

Former Tigers Davis, Francique Win Gold at Worlds

MOSCOW, Russia — Former Tiger track and field standouts Walter Davis and Allenye Francique continued to rack up international accolades Sunday as Davis won the triple jump and Francique won the 400 meters at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Davis, a six-time NCAA champion and nine-time All-American while competing for LSU, needed just one jump to better the field as he posted a personal-best and meet-winning leap of 58-2 on his first attempt of the day.

The mark, the second-best in the world this season, topped runner-up Jadel Gregorio of Brazil by nearly five inches.

The world title marked the second of Davis’ career as he also captured gold in the triple jump at the 2005 outdoor meet.

Francique, competing for is native country of Grenada, also won the second world championship of his career, successfully defending his 2004 indoor title with a season-best time of 45.54.

The time, the second fastest in the world this season, sits behind only LSU’s Xavier Carter, who clocked 45.53 in winning the NCAA Indoor title Saturday.
