Baseball Alumni Roster to Feature Five Major Leaguers

BATON ROUGE — Five major leaguers are among the 11 current professional players scheduled to participate in the Purple-Gold Alumni Game at 5 p.m. Saturday in Alex Box Stadium.

The Purple-Gold Alumni Game features members of the 2006 LSU squad and former Tigers who are active in pro baseball. The LSU team and the professional players will be merged into two squads for the game, so that former players and current players will be competing on the same teams.

Major league players scheduled to appear on Saturday include infielders Russ Johnson (New York Yankees), Ryan Theriot (Chicago Cubs) and Mike Fontenot (Chicago Cubs), and pitchers Kurt Ainsworth (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Brian Tallet (Cleveland Indians).

Six current minor leaguers are among the other former LSU players scheduled to participate in the Purple-Gold Alumni Game — pitchers Nate Bumstead, Greg Smith and Shane Youman, catcher Brad Cresse, infielder Clay Harris and outfielder Ryan Patterson.

The Purple-Gold Alumni Game will be preceded at 2:30 p.m. by the Legends Alumni Game, featuring former players from different eras of LSU Baseball. Players from LSU’s 1975 SEC Championship team as well as players from each of the Tigers’ five College World Series title teams (1991, ’93, ’96, ’97, 2000) are scheduled to appear in the Legends Alumni Game.

Tickets to the Legends Alumni Game and the Purple-Gold Alumni Game may be purchased through the LSU Athletics Ticket Office by visiting www.LSUsports.net, or by calling (225) 578-2184 or (800) 960-8587. Tickets, which are good for both games, are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12.

Prior to the Alumni events, the YMCA Baton Rouge Kids’ Baseball Clinic will be held from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. in Alex Box Stadium. The event is a free instructional clinic conducted by an All-Star list of current and former professional players, scouts and coaches. Autograph and photo opportunities will be available following the clinic.
