BATON ROUGE — LSU senior guard Darrel Mitchell and sophomore center Sylvia Fowles were named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association state college basketball players announced Wednesday.
Mitchell had 20-plus point games against both Georgia and Ole Miss in his week, while Fowles became the fourth player in women’s school history to score 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game against Vanderbilt.
Mitchell scored 24 points in 29 minutes in a home 81-52 win against Georgia and then proceeded to add 28 more in a 79-73 triumph at Ole Miss. Mitchell hit 17-of-25 field goals, including 10-of-14 three-point attempts in the two games. The St. Martinville, La., native is averaging 17.9 points per game, 4.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists for the Tigers, 6-0 in league play entering Wednesday’s game versus Auburn.
Fowles led LSU to a 75-63 victory over Vanderbilt, scoring a career high 26 points with a career-best 22 rebounds in just 29 minutes of play. She became the first LSU player in 12 years to record a 20-20 night and just the fourth player in school history in women’s basketball to accomplish the feat. Fowles was 10-of-18 shooting from the floor in the game.
Both Mitchell and Fowles were named the Southeastern Conference Players of the Week.
