Mitchell Named SEC Men’s Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — The big week of scoring by Darrel Mitchell and two more Southeastern Conference wins by LSU helped earn the senior guard men’s SEC Player of the Week honors for the second time this season as announced by the league office on Monday.

LSU defeated Georgia at home on Wednesday (81-52) and defeated Ole Miss in Oxford on Saturday (79-73).

Mitchell led LSU to its two wins last week with 24 points and eight assists against Georgia combined with scoring 28 points, including 7-of-7 from the free throw line at Ole Miss.

The St. Martinville senior shot 68 percent from the field (17-of-25), making 10-of-14 attempts from behind the arc.

Mitchell is shooting 46.2 percent from the arc for the season and needs just 13 more three-pointers to become the school’s all-time three-point field goal shooter. Mitchell earned his other SEC POW earlier in the year after the Tigers’ victory at No. 13 West Virginia in November when he made a three-pointer to force overtime and then got the three-pointer that won the game late in the extra session.

LSU (14-5, 6-0 in the SEC) hosts Auburn on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Tickets for the game are $14 with $5 youth tickets for those 12 and under. The first 1,000 fans will receive a coupon for a free hot dog. Tickets are available at the LSU Athletics Ticket Office and online at
