Gymnastics Falls to 14th in National Rankings

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s gymnastics team won it quad meet at Texas Woman’s on Sunday, but only improved on its season-high team score by .150 points to 194.050 and dropped six spots to No. 14 in the latest national rankings, released Monday.

The countries top three positions are held down by SEC foes Alabama (196.150), Florida (195.900) and Georgia (195.825). Michigan and Nebraska are knotted at No. 4 with season-high scores of 195.675. Utah (195.625), Auburn (195.300), Missouri (195.100), Stanford (194.950) and Penn State (194.875) round out the top 10.

The Tigers remain among the top 20 on each of the four individual events, improving to No. 7 on the floor (49.025), while falling to No. 6 on the bars (49.075), No. 14 on the vault (48.850) and No. 18 on the beam (48.125).

Individually, senior April Burkholder dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 in the all-around rankings after sitting out of all-around action this past weekend. She was passed by Nebraska’s Emily Parsons (39.625) and Georgia’s Courtney Kupets (39.475) in the standings.

Burkholder also remains ranked on three of the four events, holding down the No. 10 spot on the beam (9.850), the No. 19 position on the vault (9.850) and the No. 20 spot on the bars (9.850).

Junior Kelly Phelan leapt to third in the floor rankings after posting a season-high 9.925 on the event over the weekend. She is also listed at No. 9 on the bars (9.875).

Also ranked on two events this week is senior Terin Martinjak. She entered both the beam (9.850) and floor (9.850) standings at No. 10 and No. 17, respectively.

In addition, junior Nicki Butler is in the vault rankings for the first time this season. She is listed at No. 19 with a season high of 9.850.

The Tigers return to action this Friday when host Iowa at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
