COLLEGE STATION, Texas — LSU men’s tennis player Ken Skupski defeated fellow Tiger Colt Gaston Sunday in the finals of the Wells Fargo Hurricane Katrina Relief Tournament hosted by Tulane.
Skupski, who is ranked No. 17 in the nation in singles, overcame a first set loss to beat Gaston, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
“They played a very high level match,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said of Gaston and Skupski. “It was really exciting to see them play that well.”
Brown was especially excited for Skupski, whose grandfather died just before the team left for Texas.
“I know that was a lot to have on his mind when he was playing,” said Brown. “I think he felt that there was someone watching over him this weekend.”
The tournament marked the end of LSU’s 2005 fall campaign. The Tigers will next be in action at the SEC Coaches Indoor Championship Jan. 20, in Lexington, Ky.
