COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The LSU men’s tennis team completed a successful first day at the Wells Fargo Katrina Fundraiser Tournament Friday.
The Tigers will have three of the four semifinal spots in the ITA bracket of the tournament on Saturday. Ken Skupski will take on. Mohammed Dakki of Texas A&M, while Tiger teammates and usual doubles partners Colt Gaston and Danny Bryan will face each other. Both matches are scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
LSU’s Martel Campbell continued his good play defeating David Goulet of Tulane, but was then eliminated by Gaston in the quarterfinals.
Skupski secured his spot in the semifinals by defeating Dustin Phillips of Tyler Junior College, 6-2, 7-6 (2), and John Nallon of Texas A&M, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
In the Pebble Creek bracket, Paul White will compete in the semifinals tomorrow against Texas A&M’s Bret Joelson.
White defeated Matt Bain, 6-2, 6-1, in straight sets before downing Steven Shields, of Texas, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Gaston teamed up with Campbell and the pair picked up a win over Tulane’s Ryo Sigagoochi and Billy Heim, 8-4.
LSU head coach Jeff Brown was excited about the team’s performance on Friday.
“I think this is the best we have played to this point,” said Brown. “I can see the improvement and feel the young guys really starting to build confidence.”
