BATON ROUGE — After posting back-to-back shutouts against Mississippi State and Georgia, the LSU soccer team puts its Southeastern Conference winning streak on the line when it welcomes 14th-ranked Tennessee to the LSU Soccer Complex on Sunday for a match at 1 p.m.
The Tigers (6-4-2, 2-2-1 SEC) have won consecutive conference matches for the first time since defeating Mississippi State and Georgia in 2003 and have posted back-to-back SEC shutouts since blanking Ole Miss and Mississippi State in 1995.
LSU continues to be led by the play of its defense, which has not allowed a goal in the last 218:06 of play. Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Moseley has moved into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time list with five shutouts and has saved 39 shots and posted a 0.70 goals against average this season.
“Tennessee has been the class of the SEC for the last couple of years, and they will be a great challenge for our team,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “It will especially be a challenge for our back line, which keeps improving with each game. Now we’ll see three top-notch forwards, and we must stay organized and committed on the defensive end to get another win.”
Tennessee (7-4-1, 5-0 SEC) is led by a pair of freshman forwards in Kylee Rossi and Jackie Acevedo. Rossi leads the team with four goals and 11 points, while Acevedo is the team leader with five assists on the season.
Sophomore forward Genna Gorman has chipped in with three goals and nine points of her own and scored the game-winning goal for the Lady Vols on a free kick in the eighth minute of overtime against Arkansas on Friday.
After completing its four-game homestand against Tennessee, LSU will be on the road next weekend with matches against Alabama on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. and Auburn on Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
