LAFAYETTE, La. — LSU men’s tennis player Martell Campbell won the flight A consolation bracket at the Ragin’ Cajun Hibernia Bank Classic on Sunday.
After losing in the first round of the tournament, Campbell battled back, eventually defeating Filip Kanczula of Lamar, 6-1, 7-6 (1), in the consolation finals.
Campbell set himself up for a finals appearance after winning, 6-3, 6-4, over Juan Garzon of Southern Miss. Friday and earning another victory over Tiger teammate William LeFevre, 7-5, 6-0, on Saturday.
“It was nice to see Martel come out with a three and one record this weekend,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “He really competed hard and raised his level of play.”
In doubles play, freshmen Eric DeRoche and James Cluskey reached the semifinals of the flight A doubles bracket before being eliminated by ULL’s Robin Ley and Amanjot Singh, 8-3. LeFevre and Jose Moncada also made it to the semifinals in the flight B bracket, but were defeated by Ilie Babinciuc and Vlad Paunic of Southeastern.
Brown said he was pleased with the strides his team made this weekend.
“We continued to make progress in parts this weekend,” said Brown. “Even when we didn’t get wins we played well and we should be able to put all of the parts together for the spring.”
