Wroten Named LSWA Defensive Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU defensive tackle Claude Wroten and Grambling State quarterback Bruce Eugene were voted this week’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association College Football Player of the Week.

Eugene won the offensive award after completing 28-of-40 passes for 479 yards including five touchdowns while rushing for a sixth. Eugene’s four-yard touchdown run marked his first touchdown run since a one-yard run at the 4:36 mark in the third quarter of the team’s 37-34 victory over Alabama State on Nov. 8, 2003. Eugene is currently ranked third in the SWAC in career touchdown passes with 108 and fifth in career passing yards with 11,247. He also completed passes in the 52-21 win over Jackson State to eight different receivers as the New Orleans senior earned SWAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Wroten on defense record eight tackles, including two tackles totaling six-yards in losses in LSU’s 20-17 overtime win over Auburn with one sack for a four-yard loss. He also added one quarterback hurry and batted down a pass in the win over Auburn. Despite allowing Auburn to pile up 451 yards of offense, the LSU defense held the Tigers to only 17 points. In eight possessions inside the LSU 40-yard line, the Tiger defense held Auburn scoreless on five of those possessions and allowed a field goal on another possession.
