BATON ROUGE — Kyna Washington was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after leading the LSU volleyball team to a 2-0 mark over the weekend.
The Houston native led the Tigers in kills and kills per game while ranking third on the team in hitting percentage as LSU swept matches from Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Against the Bulldogs, she led the match with 14 kills and posted a career-best .400 hitting percentage.
With the Tigers facing game point against Mississippi State, 30-29, in game three last Friday, Washington recorded a kill that evened the score as LSU went on to complete the sweep, 32-30.
Against Ole Miss, the outside hitter ranked second on the team with nine kills. In the third game, she led the match with five kills and no errors for a .625 hitting mark.
For the season she ranks second on the team with 3.07 kills per game and fourth in blocks per game at 0.67 and hitting percentage at .207.
This is the first SEC Freshman of the Week honor for her this season and the second SEC Freshman of the Week honor for the Tigers this year. On the season, LSU athletes have been honored by the conference a total of six times, including two SEC Player of the Week honors and two SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Tigers return to action next weekend at Georgia and Florida. LSU will face the Bulldogs in Athens on Friday at 6 p.m. (CDT) before facing the No. 5 Gators in Gainesville on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (CDT).
