BATON ROUGE — The postponed third annual Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Golf Classic has set its new playing date of Thursday, Sept.29, at Carter Plantation.
The tournament presented by Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, benefits the Shaquille O’Neal CHAMPS/Life Skills program, which helps LSU student-athletes prepare for life after college through a variety of events, educational workshops, career seminars and community service projects. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The event was originally scheduled for Sept. 2, but was postponed in the aftermath of the hurrican.
Because of prior commitments in preparation for the soon-to-begin 2005-06 NBA season with the Miami Heat, the former LSU Player of the Year and NBA superstar will be unable to attend this year’s event.
“We hope that everyone enjoys participating in this fun event and I regret that I will not be able to attend,” O’Neal said in a statement. “I will personally make sure that I sign each team’s photo from the tournament and thank you for helping both the Life Skills program at LSU, but also those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.”
But the morning (8 a.m.) and afternoon (1 p.m.) tee times will remain for the event and teams will still be placed in the original session they were scheduled for prior to the tournament’s postponement. There will be a jambalaya dinner and an awards ceremony following the conclusion of play. As of now, the tournament is full, but tournament sponsorships are still available.
