BATON ROUGE — Off to their best start since the 1991 season, the LSU volleyball team took another major step this week as the program received votes for the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll.

The Tigers (8-1) earned two votes in the poll, the first time LSU has received votes for the Top 25 poll under head coach Fran Flory. LSU was last ranked during the 1993 season, when the Tigers won the National Invitation Volleyball Championship.

LSU swept Rice, which had been receiving votes in the poll, and dropped a hard fought five-game match to No. 15 Texas A&M last weekend at the UTSA Dome Rally. The Tigers swept both of their previous tournament, claiming the Georgia Southern and Georgia State titles in back-to-back weekends.

The Tigers are still attempting to reschedule their matches for this weekend. The Sugar Bowl Classic, which LSU had been scheduled to participate in, was cancelled in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina but may be played at Texas A&M, site of the Tulane volleyball program. Information regarding the team’s plans for this week will be released as soon as they are available.
