HOUSTON — LSU’s doubles team of Danny Bryan and Colt Gaston won the A flight doubles bracket of the Rice Crowne Plaza Invitational Sunday, topping Rice’s Ben Harknett and Hoony Shin 9-8.
The victory brings the duo’s winning streak to 15 matches, a run that dates back to the fall of 2004.
Despite the success this weekend, LSU head coach Jeff Brown feels that the pair still hasn’t reached its full potential, but was impressed by the grittiness they showed.
“They found a way to win this weekend,” said Brown. “We call it winning ugly but, they won.”
Bryan and Gaston also faced off against one another in third round singles play, with Bryan coming away with a, 6-3, 6-2, victory. With the win, Bryan won the backside of the A flight singles bracket.
Freshman James Cluskey shook off two earlier losses and earned his first victory as a Tiger, downing Virginia Tech’s Brent Wilkins in straight sets.
According to Coach Brown, the Tigers have a long to go before spring play but, he was happy with the strides that were made this weekend.
“It was a very productive weekend,” he said. “Everybody was able to get some wins but, we understand that we have a lot of work to do.”
LSU will be in action next at the ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., on October 3.
