BATON ROUGE — After posting back-to-back shutouts in road matches against Louisiana-Lafayette and Belmont, the LSU soccer team (2-2-0) returns to the LSU Soccer Complex for its home opener against Jackson State (2-1-0) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
LSU head coach Brian Lee said his team is excited to finally play at home after having home matches against South Alabama and Arkansas-Pine Bluff cancelled and its match with UL-Lafayette moved due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
“We’re really excited to finally play in the friendly confines of our great field,” Lee said. “We’re looking forward to play in front of a home crowd and our fans. It should be a fun match.”
LSU is 1-0 all-time against Jackson State and a perfect 6-0 against teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Tigers crushed Jackson State, 12-0, in the only meeting between the two teams on August 31, 2003.
The Tigers are led by junior forward Joleen Phillips, who has scored two goals and recorded one assist to lead the team with five points on the season. Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Moseley has been in goal for LSU in its last two games and has saved four shots to improve her record to 2-1 on the season.
Sunday’s theme will be “Take a Kid to the Game.” All adults accompanied by a child 12 and under will receive a free LSU soccer visor with the kids receiving free LSU soccer t-shirts.
