HELSINKI, Finland — For the third time in four days one of LSU track and field’s former standouts has won gold at the IAAF World Championships, as Derrick Brew helped Team USA to a first-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay Sunday at Olympic Stadium.

Brew teamed with Andrew Rock, Darold Williamson and 400-meter champion Jeremy Wariner to hold off a surging Bahamas squad. The foursome combined to cross the line in 2:56.91, the fastest time in the world this year.

The World Championships medal is the fourth of Brew’s career as he also helped the United States to gold at the 2001 and 2003 outdoor championships, as well as the 2001 indoor meet.

Also medaling was former Lady Tiger Ronetta Smith. Running for her native country of Jamaica, Smith joined Shericka Williams, Novlene Williams and Lorraine Fenton to earn a second-place finish in the women’s 4×400-meter relay with a time 3:23.29.

In the field, former Lady Tiger Laverne Eve wrapped up her season finishing 10th in the javelin with a throw of 187-4.
