HELSINKI, Finland — Lady Tiger great Muna Lee won gold Saturday at the IAAF World Championships, running the second leg on the United States’ championship 4×100-meter relay team at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium.
Lee again teamed with Angela Daigle, Me’Lisa Barber and 100-meter world champion Lauryn Williams to topple the competition with a world-leading effort of 41.78 seconds.
The U.S. got off to a good start as Daigle provided a slight lead at the first exchange. Lee then took the stick and ran a blistering backstretch to help pull away. Barber maintained the advantage around the bend and passed the baton to Williams who blasted down the final stretch to win her second gold medal of the championships.
In other relay action, former LSU standouts Derrick Brew and Ronetta Smith each advanced to tomorrow’s finals in the 4×400-meter relay.
Brew ran the second leg for Team USA in the qualifying round, helping Miles Smith, LaShawn Merritt and Darold Williamson to a first-place finish in their heat and the fourth best time of the day (3:00.48).
Smith, running on Jamaica’s women’s squad, joined Shericka Williams, Novlene Williams and Lorraine Fenton as the foursome advanced on time, clocking 3:27.87.
Action from the IAAF World Championships wraps up tomorrow evening.
