BATON ROUGE — Former LSU assistant track and field coach Charles Walker passed away last week from a heart attack at the age of 70.

Walker served as an assistant for nine years under head coach Joe May during the 1968-76 seasons. Under May, Walker coached the hurdles and assisted with the sprints and relays. Also known for his exceptional recruiting ability, Walker was credited with bringing to campus two of the finest hurdlers in Tiger history, in NCAA champions Allen Misher and Larry Shipp.

Prior to his time at LSU, Walker spent six seasons at Buckeye High School were he served as the Director of Physical Education, the head track coach and an assistant football coach. He was also president of the Louisiana High School Track Coaches Association during that time.

As an athlete, Walker was an All-Tri-State selection in basketball while attending Pollock High School. He went on to play basketball and run track at Louisiana College where he graduated with B.S. in physical education in 1961, before earning his master’s degree in education from LSU.

Walker is survived by his three sons, David, Dwayne and Doug Walker.
