BATON ROUGE — The three-days of Louisiana High School Coaches Association/Coca-Cola All-Star games begin Wednesday night at Southern University’s F. G. Clark Activity Center when the volleyball squads due battle beginning at 7 p.m.
Pre-game ceremonies begin at 6:50 p.m. Tickets are $7 each and are available online at www.LSUsports.net and at the Clark Center ticket office beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The all-star games are being hosted as usual by LSU but because of construction at both the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and Tiger Stadium, the games are being played on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge. The basketball games will be played Thursday night at the Clark Center, while the 68th meeting of football all-stars is set for Mumford Stadium at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
This will be the 24th time that the volleyball all-stars have participated in the week of activities and the East team has been dominant, 19-4, in the series. However, last year was the first year of the draft lottery for players in the game, so regional factors aren’t as important as they have been in the past.
At the Assembly Center a year ago, the East won the first two games, 25-15 and 25-16 only to have the West save off a match point in game three to win the game 26-24 and force a game five with a 25-22 decision. The East would finally wrap things up with a 15-11 decision in the fifth and final game as Elizabeth Hebert of St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge was named the Most Outstanding Player.
The West’s last win in the series came in 2000.
There was one roster change on the all-star squad as Brooke Miner of Dominican was injured in practice and replaced by Andrea Alleman, a 5-9 middle blocker from Notre Dame (Crowley).
Colleene Loerzel of Newman and Jody Walker of Mandeville will coach the East squad and Sandy Fussell of Assumption and Tara Young of Notre Dame will handle the West team, looking to get the West team a rare win in the series.
