BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A total of 45 LSU student-athletes were named to the 2005 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll, Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Thursday, an increase of 11 student-athletes from the inaugural Freshmen Honor Roll a year ago.
The LSU football and softball teams topped the list of teams with members on the Honor Roll, placing six student-athletes each on the list, including SEC All- Freshmen selection Early Doucet and All-Louisiana selection Vanessa Soto. Five members of the women’s soccer team, including honorable mention All-Louisiana selection Valerie Vogler, were selected.
Four members from the women’s swimming and diving team and the women’s track and field teams were included on the list. The men’s and women’s basketball team and the volleyball each had three members on the Honor Roll, including SEC Newcomer of the Year Glen Davis.
The men’s track and field team, men’s swimming and diving team, men’s and women’s golf team and women’s tennis team each placed two members on the team, while the baseball team was represented by one player.
A total of 469 freshmen student-athletes, an overall increase of 42 over last year, were named to the 2005 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll. The University of South Carolina topped the list with 76 freshmen student-athletes on the academic roster. The University of Florida was close behind with 63 honorees. The University of Tennessee was next with 47 freshmen student-athletes honored, followed by LSU in fourth overall.
The 2005 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2004-05 academic calendar.
