BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Junior All-Southeastern Conference performer Chris Wells fired a 3-under par 69 in the final round Sunday to finish in a tie for fifth place in the 2005 Greystone Invitational hosted by Greystone Golf and Country Club.
Wells entered the final round in a tie for 19th after posting a 71 and 76 in the first two rounds at the par 72 course, but fired the lowest score of the final round to finish the tournament four shots out of the lead in a tie for fifth with an even-par 216.
In all, 151 players from 15 states competed in the tournament sponsored by Golfweek and the Alabama Golf Association with Bobby Spiller defeating Stewart Whitt in a two-hole playoff for the championship. Spiller carded a 72, 69 and 71 to win the tournament with a three-round total of 4-under 212.
Past champions include All-American Lee Williams of Auburn in 2001 and 2003, as well as Auburn’s Jonathan Dismuke in 2004.
Wells was one of five members of the Southeastern Conference competing in the tournament, including Clint Provost and Gator Todd of Alabama, Richard Treis of Florida and Philip Pettit of Tennessee. Petitt tied for 19th and Todd tied for 25th, while All-SEC performers Provost and Treis finished in a tie for 48th and 56th, respectively.
This was Wells’ first tournament appearance since completing his sophomore season with the Tigers where he led the team in tournament appearances (12), stroke average (72.83), rounds of par or better (14) and top-10 finishes (6).
Wells will return to action in the 38th annual Spirit of America Golf Classic sponsored by the AGA at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, Ala., July 1-3.
