BATON ROUGE — A successful weekend at the Sun Angel Classic kept the Tiger track and field at No. 4 in the national rankings, according to the latest Trackwire 25 released Tuesday. The Lady Tigers, who were listed at No. 22 last week, fell out of the rankings.
The top four remained unchanged in the men’s standings as Arkansas leads the pack with 73 points, followed by Florida (60), Arizona (44) and the Tigers (42). Stanford (34) jumped up four spots to round out this week’s top five.
Individually, the men are paced by a trio of standout performers in senior Bennie Brazell, junior Kelly Willie and freshman Xavier Carter who are all ranked No. 2 in the country in their specialty events.
Brazell posted a world-leading time of 48.54 in the 400 hurdles at the Sun Angel Classic to earn the ranking, while Willie clocked 44.97 in his 400 meter debut to hold on to his position.
Carter, ranked in the 200 meters, has yet to run an open race this season. However, he clocked the fourth fastest indoor 200 meter time in the world earlier this year.
The trio is also an integral part of both the Tigers’ 4×100 and 4×400-meter teams that are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the country this week.
Also ranked for the men is senior Willie Bradley. He comes in at No. 10 in the triple jump.
Despite dropping out of the top 25, the Lady Tigers do have five athletes and a relay team listed among the nation’s top 12.
Freshman Ashley Owens and sophomore Tina Harris own the Lady Tigers’ top individual rankings. Owens is No. 3 in the 100 meters and Harris is No. 7 in the long jump.
Others in the top 12 are freshmen Kelly Baptiste (10th, 200 meters) and Deonna Lawrence (10th, 400 meters), senior RaNysha Leblanc (11th, 100 hurdles) and the 4×400-meter relay team (11th).
LSU returns to action this weekend, closing out its 2005 home schedule with the LSU Alumni Gold meet Saturday at Bernie Moore Stadium. Action begins at 10 a.m. with the field events. Running events follow at 1:30 p.m.
