BATON ROUGE — Following an impressive outing at last week’s Texas Relays LSU’s men’s track and field team jumped to No. 4 in the national rankings in the latest Trackwire 25 poll released Tuesday. The Lady Tigers slipped to No. 22.
Arkansas (78), Florida (65) and Arizona (44) hold down the top three spots in the men’s standings. They are followed by the Tigers (39) and Arizona State (34).
Texas (66), South Carolina (51), Tennessee (49), UCLA (47) and Florida (37) comprise the women’s top five. The Lady Tigers sit in a four-way tie for 22nd with 11 points.
In the individual event rankings, the Tigers’ 4×100-meter relay team claimed the nation’s No. 1 spot after clocking an NCAA-leading time of 38.94 over the weekend. Running on that relay are senior Bennie Brazell, junior Kelly Willie and freshman Xavier Carter, who are listed at No. 2 in the country in their signature events; Brazell the 400 hurdles, Willie the 400 meters and Carter the 200.
Also in the rankings for the men’s squad are Willie Bradley in the triple jump (No. 8) and the 4×400-meter relay team (No. 5).
For the Lady Tigers, freshman Ashley Owens and sophomore Tina Harris own the team’s top rankings. Owens is listed at No. 3 in the 100 meters, while Harris is fourth in the long jump.
Others among the top-12 include RaNysha LeBlanc in the 100 hurdles (No. 10), Deonna Lawrence in the 400 meters (No. 11) and the 4×400-meter relay team (No. 11).
The LSU track and field team returns to action this Saturday when it travels to Tempe, Ariz., for the Sun Angel Classic.
