Miles Puts Tigers Through Second Spring Scrimmage

BATON ROUGE — First-year coach Les Miles put LSU through a 120-play situational scrimmage on Saturday as the Tigers concluded their third week of spring practice here in Tiger Stadium.

LSU has three practices remaining this spring, capped with the final scrimmage in Tiger Stadium next Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Tickets for LSU’s final spring scrimmage are currently on sale at the LSU Ticket Office for $5 and $3 for students. Tickets can also be purchased on the Internet at www.LSUsports.net.

“We had a good go of it,” Miles told the media after practice. “The team is getting better in all three phases of the game. We rushed the ball well and hit some passes.

“It got hot out here today, but the players continued to play hard. I enjoyed watching the team compete.”

Statistics from the scrimmage were not released, however Miles singled out the play of running backs Joseph Addai and Alley Broussard saying both players, “made some big plays.”

When asked about quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn, Miles said, “they both played well at times. They have both made improvement this spring.”

While Saturday’s scrimmage was mostly situational in nature, they were 20 “live” plays for both the first and second units.

Other features of the scrimmage included redzone offense, goal line situations as well as the two-minute offense. The squad capped the workout with a period of field goal kicking from various lengths.

“The defense had a tough go of it early, but we put them in some tight situations in the redzone and on the goal line,” Miles said. “The defense did a nice job later in the scrimmage.”

Miles cited an example of how the defense improved as the day progressed, when during one of the goal line periods late in the scrimmage, the offense started with the ball on the 4-yard line and failed to gain on yard on three downs.

“That usually means the defense is playing well,” Miles said of the defensive effort during that part of the scrimmage.

The Tigers will take two days off before returning to the practice field on Tuesday. LSU will practice again on Thursday before the final scrimmage of the spring next Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
