Track and Field Set to Travel for 78th Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas — The LSU track and field team will compete at the 78th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas this weekend.

“It is one of the track meets held each year in the United States,” said LSU head track and field coach Dennis Shaver. “I am looking forward to see how the relay teams and the hurdles do against the competition they will face.”

The four-day meet will begin on Wednesday with the multi-event and conclude Saturday with the 4×400-meter relays. The Tigers will compete against some of the top schools in the country, including nationally ranked Texas, Arkansas, USC, Nebraska, Stanford and Baylor.

The Tigers will feature a combination of Kelly Willie, Reginald Dardar, Siraj Williams, Xavier Carter, Bennie Brazell and Marvin Stevenson in the 4×100 and 4×400-meter relays. For the women, Ashley Owens and Kelly Baptiste will take to the track in the 100-meter dash as well as the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays.

“This will be the first time that we will be running our “A” team for both the men and women in the relays,” said Shaver. “The 4×400 will be a prime time event with many of the top indoor schools running. We have had some awfully fast times in the men’s relays before, but I have never seen more talent than on this relay team.”

The Tigers will be looking to add to its 21 athletes and three relay teams that have qualified for the NCAA Regionals.

“I know for the athletes this is a big meet, but this is just another meet on the way to the NCAA Regionals and the NCAA Championships and I think the athletes realize that,” said Shaver. “This meet has a lot of prestige and has been around for a while so of course the athletes will go into this meet like it is a big meet.”

LSU will be back on the road next weekend, when it travels to Phoenix, Ariz. for the Sun Angel Classic April 16.
